After previewing many podcasts I subscribed to The Naked Vocalist/Advice and Lessons on Singing Technique, Vocal Care, and Style as my podcast of professional interest. For my podcast of personal interest I chose The Broadway Channel. This video podcast describes itself as a one on the aisle and backstage pass to Broadway and Off-Broadway. These two podcasts were very different from one another in both content and in the way the content was presented, so I was able to compare a strictly audio podcast and one that incorporated video as well. Since new episodes of both of these podcasts are produced less frequently than the Grammar Girl podcast we had to subscribe to for this assignment they were also much longer.
Prior to this assignment I had used podcasts before. My church posts a daily message as well as Sunday sermons as podcasts which you can subscribe to through their web site or through iTunes. Once you’ve subscribed to a podcast it downloads new episodes automatically and it is easy to control how many episodes you want to keep, how many you want stored on your iPod at a time, etc. and it is all done automatically when you connect your iPod to your computer.
I think that podcasts could be very valuable in education. Using podcasts, either audio or video, of your daily classes could become a great resource for students as they go back to review for tests and other assessments. Podcasts could also be used in a flipped classroom to teach content at home. In addition, students could also be the ones to create the podcasts to show what they have learned and share it with others.
