2.7 Assessment
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure student learning and technology literacy, including the use of digital assessment tools and resources. (PSC 2.7/ISTE 2g)
Artifact: Data Inventory
Reflection:
The Data Inventory was completed during course ITEC 7305, Data Analysis and School Improvement. For this artifact we were asked to collect information about the data available to administrators and teachers at our school, how it is being used, and how to analyze and use this data more effectively. For this assignment, I asked the assistant principal in charge of testing what types of testing data we had available and used this information to complete the remainder of the Data Inventory on my own.
Standard 2.7, Assessment describes a candidate’s ability to model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure student learning and technology literacy, including the use of digital assessment tools and resources. Through the completion of this artifact, I was able to take inventory of the types of assessments being used throughout the school as well as look at how the data from these assessments is currently being used. I was then able to recommend ways to facilitate the effective use of these assessments to improve student achievement. Also, in completing this inventory, I found that more forms of assessments are needed, as almost all of the current assessments being used are summative. Therefore, my Data Inventory also includes the recommendation for common formative assessments along with suggested ways to use the current data to inform and improve instruction.
Through completing this artifact, I learned about the types of data being collected by my school and how they are currently being used. I also learned that there may be more effective ways to use that same data. Also, I found that my school seemed to be lacking in diagnostic and formative assessments and focusing mainly on summative assessments. If I could go back to complete this assignment again, I would speak to subject area team leaders in addition to the assistant principal to see if teams are in fact collecting this diagnostic and formative data.
Completing a data inventory for the school could greatly impact school improvement and student learning. Being able to look at the different types of data being collected side by side can help identify areas that need improvement. The school needs to look not only at the summative data provided by state tests, but also at the formative and diagnostic data being collected by the teachers on a regular basis. Having all of this information can help the teachers and the school to make informed decisions about instructional strategies that could be implemented to increase student achievement.
