Artifact: Technology Integration Grant Proposal
Reflection:
During course ITEC 7410, Instructional Technology Leadership we were asked to complete a Grant Application to request additional funds for instructional technology in our school. As this was completed during the summer semester, I worked alone to determine a need within my school. Using my knowledge of various Web 2.0 tools I have used throughout this program, I then researched possible tools and costs to meet this need and completed the Grant Application.
Standard 1.3, Policies, Procedures, Programs, and Funding describes a candidates ability to research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support the implementation of instructional technology, including the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. In order to complete this artifact I first had to determine a need within the school that this money could fund. Since I was hoping to use this assignment as practice for writing a grant within my own school district in the fall, I decided on a need within my own classroom. I then researched various Web 2.0 tools that could help meet this need as well as any equipment that would be needed to support the use of this tool. Using the Grant Application, I recommended the use of Voicethread for my students to use to critically analyze and evaluate music and musical performances and understand the characteristics of different types of repertoire. The use of Voicethread and the headsets requested through the Grant Application would then be implemented within my classroom with students both creating and responding to Voicethreads to deepen their musical knowledge through the use of technology.
Through the completion of this artifact, I learned the valuable skill of grant writing. Each fall the Education Foundation in my school district offers five hundred dollar grants to the county’s teachers. I have never applied due to my lack of knowledge of how to write up my proposal. With the knowledge I gained through completing this Grant Application, I now feel confident enough to apply for a grant within my district. If given the opportunity, I would have liked to complete this artifact in collaboration with the other performing arts teachers in my school. Unfortunately, completing this during the summer semester did not allow for any collaboration.
The ability to write grant proposals will impact school improvement not only now, but for years to come. Funding is always an issue within the school and especially in specialty areas like the arts. The knowledge of how to write a grant has the potential to bring in much needed funds to the school for instructional technology as well as other resources to improve student learning.
