3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Class Website
Reflection:
My class website is an artifact I created outside of any particular course. After using Weebly to create this portfolio website, I decided to use this tool to create a website for my chorus classes. This was completed alone.
Standard 3.7, Communication and Collaboration asks that candidates utilize digital communication tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. This artifact was created to be able to communicate with students and their parents about what is going on in our chorus classes. As we know, students are not always responsible when it comes to getting notices and important information home to their parents. I use both this website and a Twitter feed to keep parents and students informed of upcoming events and important information. Since both the website and Twitter feed are open to the public, I am also able to share our upcoming events and the students’ accomplishments with the school and the community. For example, after some of the middle school chorus students participated in a District Honor Chorus, I was able to send a link to the website to my peers who were unable to attend to share photos and videos of their experience. I also use both the website and Twitter feed to promote upcoming performances.
By completing this artifact, I learned to design and maintain a website to communicate with my students and their parents as well as the larger community. One thing I have considered changing is adding a blog to the website. This would improve the site by adding a place for two-way communication with students and parents.
The ability to communicate effectively using digital tools is a skill that will impact school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. One of the goals in our school’s School Improvement Plan is to improve communication, both within the school and with the community. Digital tools are helping to make this easier and easier. Teachers are learning to use tools such as Weebly, Edmodo, and Blackboard to help communicate information to students and improve student learning.
