Artifact: Diversity Blog
Reflection:
The Diversity Blog post was completed as part of course ITEC 7430, Internet Tools for the Classroom. For this assignment we were asked to research and discuss the use of various digital tools in working with students with diverse backgrounds. This artifact was completed alone.
Standard 4.3, Diversity, Cultural Understanding, and Global Awareness asks that candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. Today’s classrooms are filled with diversity. Not only are our classrooms made up of students from different cultural backgrounds, religions, and economic situations, but also of students with different learning styles and educational needs. Education is not one-size-fits-all. Students need a more personal connection to what they are learning and the way in which they learn it. Technology is an important tool in creating this type of learning environment. Through the use of technology teachers are able to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of the various learners in their classroom. In a classroom with personalized learning plans the students would decide which tools would best help them to learn and to present what they have learned. While completing this artifact I looked at several different tools that could be used to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
Completing this assignment made me realize that diversity does not always mean differences in culture or economic status. It can also refer to differences in the way that students learn. Looking at diversity this way, gave me a whole different perspective of the diversity of the students in my classes. If given the option, I would have liked to spend more time on this topic, as I am sure that there are many more digital tools out there that would help meet the varied needs of my students.
Finding tools that help teachers differentiate their instruction for diverse learners will have an impact on school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. There are so many tools and resources online, many of which are free, that teachers can use to help meet the needs of different learners. There are also many tools that will let teachers expand their lessons outside of the classroom and around the world. Helping teachers find and use these tools will improve both teaching and learning.
