4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Copyright Assignment
Reflection:
The Copyright PowerPoint presentation was competed during course ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design. For this artifact we were asked to choose an area of copyright law to research and present our findings. As this was completed during the summer semester, I completed this alone.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, Legal, and Ethical Use describes a candidate’s ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology. When presented with several choices of copyright laws to research for this artifact, I chose audio, as I feel that it pertains most directly to my class. Through research of copyright and fair use, I learned about the legal ways in which sound recordings can be used in education. Using the information I discovered about both copyright law and the principle of fair use, I created a narrated PowerPoint presentation to guide teachers through possible scenarios they might encounter when using audio recordings in their lessons.
Through completing this artifact I learned many things I did not know about the legal use of sound recordings. I also learned about the factors that determine fair use of copyrighted material. While this artifact was geared toward educating teachers about copyright, I also think it is important for students to know this information. One thing I would consider changing or adding to this project is a presentation geared toward educating students about audio copyright, including examples of how they may be using sound recordings for school projects and on various social media sites.
Basic copyright law and the factors that determine fair use should be part of faculty development. Many teachers misunderstand fair use and assume that they can duplicate and share materials freely. It is important for all teachers to be educated in copyright law and for administrators to encourage the legal and ethical use of copyrighted materials.
