1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis was completed during the course ITEC 7410, Instructional Technology Leadership. In completing a SWOT Analysis we were asked to examine our school’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as they relate to ISTE’s Essential Conditions. As it was the summer semester, I completed this assignment alone using my knowledge of the school as well as the county’s Technology Plan and the school’s School Improvement Plan.
Standard 1.2, Strategic Planning describes an ability to facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. My ability to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to instructional technology within my school are demonstrated through this artifact. The completion of this artifact allowed me to design and develop a strategic plan for improvement to be implemented the following school year. In order to design and develop a strategic plan I first had to determine what my school was currently doing in terms of instructional technology, where we would like to be, and what could help or hinder our reaching those goals. In order for the plan to be implemented, I then needed to develop a strategy for professional learning, technology and teacher support, and equitable access to the technology. Communication of the results of the SWOT Analysis and the strategic plan to the stakeholders is an important step to improve instructional technology within the school. The plan should be discussed not only with faculty and staff, but with students, their parents, and the community. In order to evaluate the technology plan a technology committee should be formed. The committee would establish the types of data they will collect in order to evaluate the success of the plan. Accomplishments toward achieving the goals of the strategic plan should be shared and celebrated with all of the stakeholders on a regular basis.
Through completing the SWOT Analysis I learned a great deal about the current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats surrounding instructional technology at my school. Completing this artifact gave me an opportunity to analyze the current state of technology at my school and plan for improvements. If I could go back to make improvements to this assignment, I would have asked for feedback from administration and the School Improvement Team while completing the SWOT Analysis. Unfortunately, taking this course during the summer semester did not allow for any input from others at my school.
The work that went into the creation of this artifact will be shared with the School Improvement Team at the beginning of the new school year in hopes that it will be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan. My hope is that it will inspire the leadership at my school to look more closely at our strengths and weaknesses as well as what may be helping or hindering us in our plans for instructional technology. I further hope that a technology committee will be formed and a technology-infused strategic plan will be developed and put into place.
